Evanger's Tip: Benefits of a Grain-Free Diet

Since dogs and cats in the wild survive by eating primarily proteins, it just makes since that their domestic counterparts should acclimate well to a diet that’s free of grain. Wild canines and felines do consumer plant matter, but it’s typically by eating animals that eat plant matter. Real meat should make up the majority of a pet’s diet.

Dogs and cats have difficulty digesting wheat or corn efficiently. These convert to sugar in the blood, much the same as if you consumed fast food for all of your daily meals.

Many pooches and kitties suffer from grain allergies that play out through frequent ear infections and excessive licking. Others have a grain intolerance that results in bloating, vomiting and other forms of stomach distress.

These pets can enjoy major health benefits from a grain-free diet as it removes the allergens causing these illnesses. Diets rich in real meat products and protein can improve coat and skin, while also providing extra energy. Going with a proper grain free option can also deliver necessary nutrients of carbohydrates through fruits and vegetables.

When transitioning to a grain free diet for your dog or cat, take care to transition slowly to protect its sensitive digestive system. While some recommend making the change over a week, others feel it should be a bit longer. Try replacing just one Tablespoon of food at a time. Monitor your pet’s behavior and stool consistency to ensure the transition is being tolerated before introducing another Tablespoon of new food.
