The Avengers
The Avengers, new in theaters last week, stars a team of superheroes—Iron Man, the Hulk, et al.—recruited by eye-patched leader Nick Fury to defeat Loki, a Norse god with a Hitler complex bent on “freeing the world from freedom.” Bickering and the destruction of midtown ensue. Preceded by a $300 million head start at the international box office, The Avengers was sweet revenge for nerd-god director Joss Whedon (Dollhouse, Firefly), who’s had more experience creating canceled TV shows than money-printing movie franchises.

The Avengers
The Avengers, which spent about a week in theaters in 1998, was adapted from the beloved sixties British TV series and starred a pair of secret agents—John Steed and Emma Peel—recruited by wheelchair-bound leader Mother to defeat supervillain August de Wynter (Sean Connery), a mad scientist with a Hitler complex bent on controlling the world’s weather. Chemistry-free banter and the devastation of Connery’s dignity ensued. The movie’s bad reviews and low box office were sweet revenge for the dozens who actually paid to sit through it.

The Avengers
The Avengers, released in 1942, starred a journalist recruited by a newspaper to be a foreign correspondent in Norway, and by a Norwegian fisherman to help thwart the country’s invasion by Hitler, a German dictator bent on world domination and having a complex named after himself. Romantic banter with the fisherman’s daughter and the destruction of Europe ensued. Well reviewed but forgotten to history, the movie will have its revenge when it’s accidentally placed in the Netflix queues of fanboys intending to rent 2012’s The Avengers.

Evanger’s Dog and Cat Food
Evanger’s Dog and Cat Food Co., founded in Illinois in 1935, is the maker of all-natural, preservative-free pet foods, many of which, according to the company’s website, have been certified by the Chicago Rabbinical Council as suitable for kosher events. Owners Holly Sher and husband Joel Sher have recruited their dog Yukon, a Samoyed-Chow Chow mix with a “very selective palate,” to personally taste and approve all varieties of Evanger’s unleavened canine chow. Yukon may not be Iron Man, but he’s a superhero to anyone catering a puppy Seder.
