Political Pooches

September 23, 2013 is national Dogs in Politics Day, and what pooch could be more famous than America’s First Dog?! After winning the 2008 election, President Barack Obama made good on his promise to daughters Malia and Sasha by bringing home “Bo,” a black-and-white Portuguese water dog – a gift from another famous statesman, the late Senator Edward Kennedy.

Portuguese water dogs are highly intelligent working dogs with strong stamina and a friendly demeanor. Portuguese water dogs crave companionship and will remain in close proximity with their masters, whether inside or outside. The coat of a Portuguese water dog is thick and either curly or wavy, but is singled-layered and does not shed, which makes them ideal for owners with pet allergies (like Malia Obama).

While many past presidents have opted for more traditional breeds of Terriers, Spaniels and Retrievers, Bo is the first Portuguese water dog to join the White House. Given his natural tendencies to be loyal and hard-working, Bo no doubt makes for an ideal political companion. Although Portuguese water dogs are a relatively rare breed, their popularity has soared since Bo’s arrival and will likely increase in popularity for years to come.

If you were in politics, who would be your ideal furry companion?
