Developed centuries ago in the
Chinese emperor’s palace, the Shih Tzu was a pampered pet that lived the luxury
life of a royal “lap warmer.” Since it became more widely known beyond China in
the 20th century, it’s now one of the most popular toy dog breeds in
the United States and United Kingdom.
The compact and solid “lion dog”
is most distinguished by its flowing double coat that requires regular brushing
and maintenance to avoid tangles. Affectionate, charming and playful, the portable
pooch has big dark eyes and an arrogant carriage with head held high and tail
curving over its back.
On the health front, these
short-legged canines are satisfied with daily walks coupled with indoor
playtime. Among health issues linked to the breed are hypothyroidism that can generally
be treated with drug therapy, keratoconjunctivitis
sicca (dry eye), renal dysplasia, intervertebral
disk disease common to certain toy breeds, and breathing problems related to
the facial shape.
Unfortunately,
the Shih Tzu is also prone to food allergies, ear infections, dental problems
and skin infections. To provide your “lion dog” an allergy-friendly canine diet,
consider Evanger’s
Hand-Packed Specialties that include Catch of the Day, Braised Beef Chunks with Gravy
and Chunky Chicken
Casserole. Each of these grain-free delights is made with fresh real
meats and produce, without any by-products or artificial preservatives, helping
to keep your Shih Tzu in optimal health.
Since
the Shih Tzu has a short muzzle, it’s best to serve
Evanger’s healthy meals and water in shallow dishes and bowls. Those that are
made of stainless steel are most recommended.
