Few
pets love bath time, but regular grooming is an important part of your dog’s
health maintenance. While regular brushing can go a long way, a gentle sudsy
dog bath can help nourish the skin and coat, while ridding the coat of
allergens, dirt, and mattes.

Since
some dogs absolutely detest the bathing process, it’s important to make your
pet feel as comfortable as possible. Here are a few tips to make the
do-it-yourself route more enjoyable.
Tools Required – Gather dog shampoo,
conditioner (optional), towel, waterproof apron (optional), brush/comb and healthy
dog treats for good behavior. We are partial to our own
delicious 6 calorie Nothing But Natural Jerky Treats.
Brushing – Brush your dog to rid his coat
of tangles or mats. Brushing first can help the shampoo better penetrate to the
skin. Find the best comb and/or brush for his coat type. When brushing out mats,
hold your pet’s fur close to the skin and gently working out the mat. It’s fine
to cut out mats that can’t be removed via brushing.
Bathing – Use plenty of warm water to
keep him nice and wet, and be sure to work the soap all the way through his fur
to his skin. Start at the neck and work your way down. While bathing him, check
for ticks, fleas, cuts or irritated skin. Some pet parents tend to skip face washing, but consider that the face is a bacteria trap where
food and water cling, especially around the mouth. If your pet is especially
resentful of water around his face, try using a washcloth instead.
Drying – Allow your canine to drip dry
for a few minutes before towel drying him. You can purchase a special doggy
blow dryer or can use a regular one on the cool setting.
Aside
from do-it-yourself grooming sessions, help maintain a healthy coat through
nutrition. Select a dog food that lists a quality protein as its primary
ingredient, and make sure it’s free of fillers and artificial preservatives.
