It’s that time of year when we all make resolutions to improve in the New Year. Many of us are committed to get healthier, so why not include your pet? According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 52.6% of US dogs are overweight or obese and 57.6% of US cats are overweight and obese. So why not include Fido and Fifi in your New Years resolutions for better health?
Mind the bowl. It’s easy to fall for the classic hungry eyes that your dog or cat has mastered throughout the years. But one of the most common culprits in overweight pets is simply overfeeding. Keep in mind that suggested servings printed on your dog food label represent vast generalizations that may not accurately take into account muscle mass, exercise level, and treat consumption. A trick we like to use here to keep food volume up while reducing calories is to replace a portion of food with Evanger’s Grain Free Sweet Potato. Our Sweet Potato is 100% pure. Trust us, this is MUCH healthier than what you will find at a human grocery store that is chock full of sugar, corn syrup, and preservatives.
Mind the treats. Many dog and cat treats are packed with calories that are easy to dismiss in your pet’s daily caloric intake. Don’t skimp on the treats, but choose a low calorie brand. Remember also that a little goes a long way! Choose a treat that is easy to break or tear into tiny pieces. Your pet will love you five times over for the same snack divided into five pieces – try it! Try Evanger’s Nothing But Natural Jerky Treats for dogs at only 6 calories each, or Freeze Dried Treats for cats and dogs.
Happy New Year to all of our loyal customers!
