Pet
parents hear it time and time again. Oral care is one of the most important
health related topics that canines and felines face. According to an American Veterinary Dental
Society report, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show periodontal (gum) disease signs
by age three. In fact, the report goes on to say that this is the number one
disease among these domestic pets.
When
bacteria and food particles lodge in teeth and gums, it forms a silky white
film of plaque that will harden into tartar when not treated. The danger with
this disease is that it diminishes your pet’s quality of life, is very painful
and can lead to extremely serious health problems. Bacteria from the infected
oral environment can seep into the blood stream causing complications with the
heart, kidneys and liver.

Especially in dogs, contributing factors include age (more common in older dogs), breed (small dogs are more prone because of overcrowded teeth) and food (sticky food leads to faster buildup of plaque).
The good
news is that while periodontal disease is the number one disease among pets, it
is also one of the most treatable. Extending your pet’s life and extending its
quality is easier than ever thanks to new products and techniques.
To help combat
this foe, begin with the basics. Have your vet perform a dental exam to
determine if your pet has dental issues and if it needs an ultrasonic teeth
cleaning. Then brush your dog’s teeth on a regular basis – a process that he
won’t likely embrace, but can grow to tolerate if you handle it properly.
1) Gradually introduce a brushing program to avoid
over-restraining. Keep sessions short and positive. Praise your pup throughout
the process.
2) Dip a finger into beef bouillon and then gently rub it
over the pet’s mouth and teeth.
3) Slowly introduce gauze over the finger and gently scrub
teeth in a circular motion at a 45-degree angle.
4) Introduce a soft toothbrush designed specifically for
pets. Avoid toothpaste designed for humans as it could potentially upset your
dog’s stomach.
As a reward for good behavior
during brushing sessions, continue on the health track with savory treats like Evanger’s Raw Gently Dried Beef Lungs,
appropriate for both dogs and cats. These palatable, wholesome treats are excellent for
finicky pets or pets with food sensitivities.
