Developed in Germany more than 300
years ago, the Dachshund is a small breed hound with a keen sense of smell
giving him an edge for trailing. He stands low to ground with a long body and short legs, and displays
robust muscular development. The Dachshund is an intelligent dog with
confident head carriage and alert facial expression. This small breed’s hunting
spirit, distinctive build and good nose make him well suited for below-ground
work and for beating the bush.
Behavior/Temperament
Playful,
loveable companions, Dachshunds are great dogs for many homes–including those
with children with appropriate supervision. Requiring moderate exercise, they can
adapt to most living environments. It’s tough to stay in a bad mood in the presence
of a Dachsie since they are so curious and upbeat! They’re alert, clever,
playful and affectionate. Yet, this small dog breed can also be independent with
minds of their own–to the point of being downright stubborn. As is the case
with most hounds, Dachshunds require early socialization and continued
obedience training.

Care
Dachshunds
come in wirehair, longhaired and smooth varieties. Grooming needs increase with
coat length. While pet parents can typically handle the grooming, many opt for
professional services. Nails should be trimmed regularly to avoid cracking and
overgrowth. Teeth should be brushed regularly and ears should be checked
regularly to avoid a buildup of debris and wax that could result in an
infection.
Health
A small
breed dog with a lifespan of 12 to 16 years, the Dachshund is typically a
healthy dog breed. An overweight Dachsie is prone to many of the same problems
experienced by overweight humans, such as joint problems, diabetes, decreased
stamina and potential back issues. If you’re considering a Dachshund as a new
addition to your family, be sure to work with a responsible breeder who
utilizes genetic testing of their breeding stock to reduce the likelihood of
disease in their puppies.
